Aadi thengai sudum pandigai
I am sanchana,my native is salem. In my native town there is festival which only celebrated here and surrounding area only.whichAadi thengai sudum pandigai ( Fire roasted coconut festival )
A unique event observed widely in Salem district connected with the first day of the Tamil month ‘Aadi’. One eye of the coconut is pierced open with a knife. After removing the water, the roasted sesame seeds, grams, rice and jaggery are filled in the empty coconut, along with the preserved coconut water.
One end of the long wooden stick is sharpened so that it fits the hole made on the coconut. The coconut is rotated so that it gets roasted on all sides. The desert is served to the family members and visiting friends.
Following are the 3 Legends associated with this unique festival.
1. The Mahabharat war started on Aadi month 1st and ended on 18th day. In the war of Good vs Evil, those who supported good prepared this roasted coconut and offered along with prayed to Gods preferably Vinayagar or any other God according to their wish. 2. During Mahabharat days, the Pandavas who where in exile for 12 years, spent one more year in underground. During that one year, to hide there identity they kept their weapons secretly under a tree in graveyard. After completing one year, they took those weapons, cleaned and roasted on fire to clean them for prayers. That was done on Aadi 1st. In rememberence it is continued till now in form of coconut and stick. 3. Before starting the war, it is customary to give a sacrifice in form of humans in those days. Coconut is respected as a life.( The reason why coconuts are broken in temples even now. ) The coconut shell is broken once it is roasted completely. That moment is taken as moksham and dedicated as sacrifice and it is assumed the war is started since the sacrifice is done. In my childhood days it is one of my favourite festival. We used to help my mother this coconut preparation it is very fun full activity. And everyone in our street gather together and roast the coconut and that time we had very best time. After roasting the coconut we take them to temple and break them infront of God and pray for good things and came back to home and enjoy the roasted coconut it was very delicious to eat. That time was one of my favourite unforgettable memories
